The new Ullens Center for Contemporary Art opened this week with an exhibition of 30 Chinese artists entitled '85 New Wave: The Birth of Chinese Contemporary Art' which examines a unique episode of art history, starting in 1985, when China began reinventing its own culture and contemporary Chinese art began. This is the first in a trilogy of exhibitions presented at UCCA during its first year. '85 New Wave' (Nov 2007-Feb 2008) will be followed in the spring by 'House of Oracles: A Huang Yong Ping Retrospective' (Mar-Jun 2008), the artist's first comprehensive exhibition in China; and in the summer, to coincide with the Olympics, UCCA will present the first Ullens Collection exhibition in China (Jul-Oct 2008). UCCA, situated in a 8,000 square meter Bauhaus-styled factory building in the Dashanzi Art District in Beijing, is also inviting unsolicited proposals from artists seeking to present their work in the center's 200 square meter exhibition hall.
