Lannan Reading : Jonathan Kozol

Wednesday, September 26, 2007 at 7:00 PM
Lensic Performing Arts Center
SOLD OUT

Jonathan Kozol’s books have set the agenda for social change for three decades, covering issues such as illiteracy, homelessness, racial segregation, and poverty in America. His publications include Savage Inequalities, Amazing Grace, and Ordinary Resurrections. For his book, The Shame of the Nation: The Restoration of Apartheid Schooling in America, Kozol visited 60 schools in 11 states over a five-year period and finds, despite the promise of Brown v. Board of Education, many schools serving black and Hispanic children are spiraling backward to the pre-Brown era. His most recent book, Letters to a Young Teacher, is a guide into “the joys and challenges and passionate rewards of a beautiful profession.”

HIGH MAYHEM - Friday, Saturday and Sunday

Unlike any other music festival, High Mayhem is bringing you 29 local and national experimental and emerging artists to perform September 21, 22, and 23 at the 7th Annual High Mayhem Emerging Music and Arts Festival in Santa Fe, NM. The festival includes a wide range of music, video arts, and performing arts. Produced by non-profit organization, High Mayhem, at the Wise Fool Performance Space in Santa Fe, NM, the festival features live improvisations that combine sound, vision, and movement. Every act will be recorded, photographed, and videotaped for archiving and distribution. The multitude of amazing acts will perform both in and outside the Wise Fool Performance Space, including musicians, performance artists, and thrown-image artists, many of them in combination. High Mayhem’s crew of Audio and Visual technicians will spend the week prior to the festival outfitting Wise Fool with multi-track recording gear, computers, cameras and broadcast systems which will effectively turn the venue into several soundstages.

Founded in 2001, High Mayhem Emerging Arts is a not-for-profit emerging arts facility, record label and multimedia production collective based in Santa Fe, New Mexico. We challenge the homogenizing effect of pop-culture groupthink by providing opportunities for and fostering collaborations with underrepresented "experimental" artists.

Hirshhorn Director to head the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis

This article was published in the New York Times on September 12, 2007. Written by CAROL VOGEL

After a six-month international search, the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis said yesterday that it had appointed Olga Viso, director of the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, as its new director.

Ms. Viso, who is to assume the post in January, succeeds Kathy Halbreich, who has led the Walker for 16 years and is retiring in November.

Like the Hirshhorn, the Walker is devoted to contemporary art and culture. Under Ms. Halbreich’s leadership, it has flourished as an alternative to conventional museums by championing experimental art and performance pieces and introducing Americans to artists and genres from other countries.

Artist Talk with Polly Apfelbaum

Big Bubbles, 2000. Dye and Velvet. 560 cm in diameter.

Polly Apfelbaum has become internationally known for her installations of hand-dyed, cut velvet and other fabric, which she calls “fallen paintings” because they appear as if they have slid from the wall and come to rest on the floor. They are comprised of an accumulation of smaller “compositions” on velvet and appear to ooze into a given space like a viscous liquid in motion or the mitosis of cells. These works have allowed her to explore the nature of painting and sculpture, as well as textiles and the various connotations associated with them. In her lecture, Apfelbaum will talk about her fallen paintings as well as her most recent work, including a foray into printmaking with large-scale woodblock prints and lithographs she will be creating at Tamarind Institute, Albuquerque, in September.

Polly Apfelbaum (b. 1955) lives and works in New York. She is a graduate of the Tyler School of Art, and her work is included in numerous museum collections, among them the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Whitney Museum of American Art; the Brooklyn Museum of Art; the Armand Hammer Museum of Art, Los Angeles; the Henry Art Gallery, Seattle; and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago.

MUSIC: St. Vincent

"These Days" written by Jackson Browne

I've been out walking.
I don't do too much talking

These days, these days.
These days I seem to think a lot
About the things that I forgot to do
And all the times I had the chance to.

I've stopped my rambling,
I don't do too much gambling
These days, these days.
These days I seem to think about
How all the changes came about my ways
And I wonder if I'll see another highway.

I had a lover,
I don't think I'll risk another
These days, these days.
And if I seem to be afraid
To live the life that I have made in song
It's just that I've been losing so long.
La la la la la.

I've stopped my dreaming,
I won't do too much scheming
These days, these days.
These days I sit on corner stones
And count the time in quarter tones to ten.
Please don't confront me with my failures,
I had not forgotten them.

St. Vincent, a.k.a. Annie Clark, was born in 1982 in Chicago, IL. Her debut album, Marry Me, came out on July 10, 2007 on Beggars Banquet Records.

Why is Iraq in Chaos?

watch this film...

FILM: No End In Sight

This film is currently playing at The Screen on the College of Santa Fe Click here for current showtimes.

NO END SIGHT alternates between U.S. policy decisions and Iraqi consequences, systematically dissecting the Bush Administration’s decisions. The consequences of those decisions now include 3,100 American deaths and 23,000 American wounded, Iraq on the brink of civil war, hundreds of thousands of Iraqi civilian deaths, the strengthening of Iran, the weakening of the U.S. military, and economic costs of over $2 trillion. It marks the first time Americans will be allowed inside the White House, Pentagon, and Baghdad’s Green Zone to understand for themselves what has become the disintegration of Iraq.
