Knife performed by Grizzly Bear
Wordless Music presents
Grizzly Bear with Michael Harrison
Saturday, November 3rd at 8pm
The Wordless Music series pairs artists working in contemporary indie- and electronic-type genres with classical musicians. Brooklyn's Grizzly Bear pile layers of exotic instrumentation and spectral vocal harmonies atop their labyrinthine songs. Elegant phrasing, a cavernous sense of space, and Ed Droste's velvety voice make them one of indie rock's most architecturally imposing bands. Live, their three- and four-part harmonies are multiplied with a looping device, providing a choral uplift more suited to cathedrals than bars. On the classical end, pianist Michael Harrison performs material from his new album, Revelation: Music in Pure Intonation. A La Monte Young protégé, Harrison continues his mentor's experiments in justly intoned piano. Harris' quick microtonal clusters create eerie droning effects within his already-striking compositions; think Michael Nyman collaborating with a Tibetan singing bowl.
